How to use the futures position size calculator
- Pick your contract. The tick size and tick value load automatically, taken from CME contract specifications rather than typed from memory.
- Enter your account balance and the percent of it you are willing to lose if the stop is hit. One percent is the common convention.
- Enter the stop distance. Use ticks if you think in ticks, price points if you think in chart units, or just type your entry and stop prices and let the tool measure the distance.
- Read the answer. The calculator floors the contract count to a whole number, shows the dollars actually at risk, and warns you when the full-size contract is too big for your budget.
- Optionally add a target distance for the reward-to-risk readout, your broker's day margin for a buying-power check, and a hard contract cap if your prop firm sets one.
A worked example: sizing an ES trade
Say your account holds 10,000 dollars and you risk 1 percent, so 100 dollars per trade. You want to short the E-mini S&P 500 with an 8-point stop. ES ticks in 0.25-point steps worth 12.50 dollars each, so 8 points is 32 ticks, and one contract risks 32 times 12.50: 400 dollars.
Your budget covers a quarter of that. The calculator returns zero contracts, and this is where most tools stop. Ours does not. It checks the micro version automatically: the same 32-tick stop on MES risks 40 dollars per contract, so it suggests two MES, which risks 80 dollars and stays inside your 100-dollar budget. Same trade idea, same stop, right size.
The math behind contract sizing
The whole calculation is four lines. Risk budget equals balance times risk percent. Risk per contract equals stop distance in ticks times tick value. Contracts equal the budget divided by risk per contract, rounded down. Dollars at risk equal contracts times risk per contract.
Rounding down is not a detail. Futures do not trade in fractions, and rounding 1.9 contracts up to 2 pushes your real loss past the number you planned. The table under the result shows the whole-number count at four risk settings, so you can see exactly where the next contract becomes affordable.
Why ticks and tick values trip people up
Every futures contract has its own tick size and tick value, and they differ wildly. A tick on ES is 0.25 points worth 12.50 dollars. A tick on crude oil is a single cent worth 10 dollars. Treasury futures quote in fractions: a ZB tick is 1/32 of a point worth 31.25 dollars, and ZN moves in halves of 1/32 worth 15.625 dollars. Guess any of these and your position size is wrong before the trade starts.
We checked every value in this tool against the CME contract pages, because several popular calculators publish wrong ones. While building this page we found a well-known competitor listing the Russell E-mini at twice its real tick value and Euro FX at double as well. Sizing from wrong specs means every trade carries roughly half or double the risk you intended.

Two habits keep this table useful. First, always read tick size and tick value together, because a small tick can carry a large value: crude oil moves in one-cent steps that cost 10 dollars each. Second, notice how the treasury contracts break the pattern entirely, quoting in fractions of a point. When a new contract enters your rotation, look its specs up once, write them down, and only then size a trade on it.
Micros first: the sizing tool most traders ignore
Micro contracts are one tenth of the E-mini size, and they exist precisely for the problem in the worked example above. With minis alone, a 10,000-dollar account often faces a brutal choice: take zero trades or oversize. Micros restore the middle ground. Two MES instead of a fifth of an ES. Seven MNQ instead of 0.7 NQ.
The calculator handles this automatically: whenever the full-size contract exceeds your budget, it computes the micro equivalent and tells you how many fit. If even the micro is too big, it says so plainly and suggests skipping the trade. A trade you cannot size correctly is not a trade; it is exposure.
Margin is a constraint, not a target
Day margin tells you how many contracts your broker lets you hold. It says nothing about how many you should hold. A broker offering 500-dollar intraday ES margin will happily let a 10,000-dollar account open 20 contracts, a position where an 8-point stop loses 8,000 dollars. Margin measures the broker's risk, not yours.
Watch the clock as well. Day margins apply only while the session is liquid; hold a position toward the close and your broker steps the requirement up to the exchange overnight level, often five to ten times higher. Plenty of forced liquidations happen at that switch, not at the stop.
That is why the margin field here works as a sanity check rather than a sizing input. The tool sizes from your stop and your risk budget first, then verifies the margin actually fits your account and warns you when it does not. Futures against forex: same discipline, different units
If you trade forex too, the logic here mirrors the position size calculator: budget divided by stop cost gives size. The difference is granularity. Forex lots scale down to 0.01, so the answer is nearly continuous. Futures snap to whole contracts, which is why the floor operation and the micro-contract path matter so much more here.

Prop-firm futures accounts change the arithmetic
Funded futures accounts add two constraints this calculator was built to respect. First, the trailing drawdown is usually far smaller than the account headline, so your true risk base is the distance to the drawdown limit, not the balance. Enter that distance as your balance and the sizing stays honest. Second, most programs cap contracts outright, which is exactly what the max-contracts field enforces: the tool sizes normally, then clips to your cap and tells you it did.

What this futures position size calculator cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether the trade is good. It sizes any stop you give it with equal enthusiasm, whether the stop sits behind real structure or in the middle of noise. The math also assumes your fill is your entry and your stop fills at its level; a fast market can slip both, and overnight gaps can jump a stop entirely, especially through weekend and holiday closes.
It also does not know today's volatility. An 8-point ES stop is roomy on a quiet morning and tight during a data release. FAQ
Which futures contracts does the calculator support?
Twenty CME contracts: the four equity index E-minis and their micros, crude oil and micro crude, gold and micro gold, silver and micro silver, Euro FX and its micro, the 30-year bond, the 10-year note, and Bitcoin with micro Bitcoin. Each carries its exchange tick size and tick value, so the dollar math is exact.
Why does the tool round contracts down instead of to the nearest whole number?
Because rounding up breaks your risk budget. If the math says 1.9 contracts, trading 2 means risking about 5 percent more than you planned on every such trade. Rounding down keeps the realized loss at or under the number you chose. The micro suggestion exists so that rounding down to zero does not simply end the conversation.
Should I size from margin instead of my stop?
No. Margin tells you the largest position your broker tolerates, and intraday margins are set low enough to let small accounts take oversized risk. Size from the stop and the risk budget, then use the margin field only to confirm the position fits. If the margin check fails, the position was too big for the account regardless of what the sizing said.
How do I size on a funded prop-firm account?
Use your remaining distance to the drawdown limit as the balance, not the headline account size. A 50,000-dollar account with a 2,000-dollar trailing drawdown is, for risk purposes, a 2,000-dollar account. Enter your program's contract cap in the cap field and the tool will respect it.
Are the tick values here accurate?
Yes, each one matches the CME contract specifications, and we re-check them when contracts change. That said, always confirm specs with your broker before trading, since exchanges do occasionally revise products. Results are not guaranteed; past performance is not indicative of future results.
