Extreme RSI Indicator: Levels At 5 And 95, Not 30 And 70

Written by Dominic Walsh · Published · Last updated

The extreme rsi indicator moves the goalposts a long way out. Instead of 30 and 70, the reference lines sit at `ExtremeOversold` `5.0` and `ExtremeOverbought` `95.0`. A 14-bar reading reaches those levels a handful of times a year on a slow chart, which is exactly the point.

This build ships as a compiled .ex4 for MT4 and .ex5 for MT5; the screenshots below come from EURUSD H1.

What you see once it loads

Extreme RSI is the dodger blue line in the pane below price.

Reference lines mark 5, 50 and 95.

BUY places a lime arrow just under the 5 line when the reading gets there.

SELL places a red arrow just above the 95 line for the mirror case.

How the Extreme RSI Indicator reaches a value

Reading the index

iRSI supplies the value at `RSIPeriod` `14` on the close, which is the standard length. The code also fetches the previous bar reading, so a mark records a crossing of the level rather than every bar spent beyond it.

Placing the marks inside the pane

The arrows do not sit on the RSI line. A buy writes `ExtremeOversold` minus `ArrowOffset` `3.0` and a sell writes `ExtremeOverbought` plus the same. So both marks sit at fixed heights, just outside the reference lines.

Why 5 and 95 at all

A 14-bar reading spends most of its life between 30 and 70. Reaching 5 needs a run of closes with almost no up bars in it. That rarity is the whole design, and it is why the marks are worth noticing when they appear.

What each state tells you

A visit to 5 or 95 is a statement about how one-sided the last fourteen bars were.

The 50 line is the balance point where average gains and losses match.

Extremes can hold for several bars during a strong move.

Loosen `ExtremeOversold` toward 10 if the pane never marks anything.

Alert channels in this build: popup, one message per closed bar.

`AlertsOn` ships on and raises a terminal popup when a closed bar reaches an extreme. This build has no push, email or sound channel. The guard permits one message per closed bar, so a reading that stays at the extreme will not repeat.

Choosing well

Reaching 5 or 95 depends on how one-sided a chart gets. EURUSD H1 is the reference chart, where a visit happens a few times a month. On M5 the reading gets there far more often, since fourteen bars covers barely an hour. On daily charts a visit is a genuine event.

Where care is needed

An extreme reading measures the recent past, and a strong trend can hold one for many bars.

At 5 and 95 the marks are so rare that a quiet chart can go weeks without any.

The arrows sit at fixed pane heights, so they show timing rather than the reading itself.

Copy the compiled Extreme RSI Indicator file into your MQL4/Indicators folder, and the MT5 build into MQL5/Indicators, then restart the terminal and drag it onto a chart. The step-by-step guide with screenshots is at how to install MT4 and MT5 indicators.

FAQ

Why does ExtremeOversold default to 5.0?

Because the usual 30 fires far too often to be interesting. Reaching 5 needs a stretch of closes with almost no up bars in it, which is genuinely uncommon. That rarity is what makes the mark worth watching when it does appear.

How often will RSIPeriod at 14 reach 95?

On EURUSD H1, a few times a month. Drop to M5 and it happens much more often, because fourteen bars there covers barely an hour of trade. A visit to 95 on the daily chart is the sort of thing you would remember.

What is ArrowOffset measured in?

Pane units, not price. The buy mark sits at `ExtremeOversold` minus `ArrowOffset` `3.0`, which lands it at 2 on the scale. That is why the arrows sit at fixed heights instead of following the line.

Should I loosen the levels on H1?

Try 10 and 90 before anything more drastic. That roughly doubles the mark count on EURUSD H1 while keeping the readings genuinely unusual. Moving all the way back to 30 and 70 turns the tool into an ordinary RSI.

Are results guaranteed?

No. Trading involves risk. Results are not guaranteed; past performance is not indicative of future results. Use the Extreme RSI Indicator as one input. Always backtest before trading live.
