Reverse RSI Indicator: The Reading And Its Own Mirror

Written by Dominic Walsh · Published · Last updated

The reverse rsi indicator shows the same reading twice. One line is the RSI. The other is one hundred minus that value, which is the mirror image. Seeing both at once makes a stretched reading obvious.

This build ships as a compiled .ex4 for MT4 and .ex5 for MT5.

Platforms MT4 (.ex4) + MT5 (.ex5)
Chart window Separate window (levels 30 / 50 / 70)
Plots 4: Reverse RSI, Mirror (100-RSI), Reverse Buy, Reverse Sell
Alerts popup, push notification, email, sound
Inputs 11

What lands on your chart

A dodger blue `Reverse RSI` line carries the reading itself.

A medium orchid `Mirror (100-RSI)` line flips it upside down.

`Reverse Buy` and `Reverse Sell` mark crossings of the two levels.

Reference lines sit at 30, 50 and 70.

  • Reverse RSI: line, dodger blue, width 2
  • Mirror (100-RSI): line, medium orchid, width 1
  • Reverse Buy: arrow, lime, width 2, arrow code 233
  • Reverse Sell: arrow, red, width 2, arrow code 234

What happens on each bar

The reading is built here

No terminal call appears. Average gain and average loss run at `InpPeriod` `14` using Wilder’s own smoothing, then combine into the familiar 0 to 100 figure.

The mirror is one subtraction

One hundred minus the reading gives the second line. `ShowMirror` `true` turns it on. The two lines cross at fifty, always, which makes that level visually unmissable.

Marks land on the line

Both signal buffers receive the current reading rather than a price. So each mark sits exactly where the crossing happened inside the pane.

Making it useful

The two lines are symmetrical, so a gap between them shows how stretched the reading is.

They meet at fifty, which is the neutral point of the scale.

`InpCooldownBars` `3` keeps a cluster of marks down to one.

Turning `ShowMirror` off leaves an ordinary RSI pane.

Alert channels in this build: popup, push notification, email and sound, one message per closed bar.

`EnableAlerts` controls every level alert and arrives true with `EnablePopup`. `EnablePushNotify` buzzes a phone, `EnableEmail` posts mail and `EnableSound` plays `SoundFile`. Those three ship off. Only a closed bar can report.

Picking a chart for it

A bounded reading behaves alike on most charts. EURUSD H1 is the reference chart, where fourteen bars covers over half a day. On M5 both lines reach the levels several times a session. Daily bars slow that right down.

Where it lets you down

The mirror carries no new information, since it is one subtraction away.

A strong trend pins the reading near a level for many bars.

Two lines in a small pane can be hard to tell apart at a glance.

Copy the compiled Reverse rsi Indicator file into your MQL4/Indicators folder, and the MT5 build into MQL5/Indicators, then restart the terminal and drag it onto a chart. The step-by-step guide with screenshots is at how to install MT4 and MT5 indicators.

FAQ

What does the Mirror (100-RSI) line add?

Symmetry rather than new data. It is the same reading subtracted from one hundred, so it carries nothing the first line does not. What it gives you is an obvious visual crossing at fifty.

Where does a Reverse Buy mark land?

Both signal buffers receive the current reading rather than a price. That places each mark exactly where the level crossing happened, which keeps a run of them easy to trace inside the pane.

What does InpCooldownBars 3 prevent?

A cluster. A reading hovering around thirty can cross back and forth several bars running, and without a gap each wobble would earn a mark. Three bars cuts that down to one.

Does InpPeriod 14 call the terminal RSI?

No, the build computes it directly using Wilder’s smoothing. The result matches the standard figure, but nothing here depends on the terminal function, which keeps the calculation visible in the source.

Are results guaranteed?

No. Trading involves risk. Results are not guaranteed; past performance is not indicative of future results. Use the Reverse rsi Indicator as one input. Always backtest before trading live.
